Franck Gérard

A practice at the intersection of conceptual art, cryptographic protocols, visual & digital art.

Biography

Franck Gérard (b. 1969) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Angers, France, whose practice spans analogue and digital photography, graphic design, programming, and algorithmic protocols, with artificial intelligence approached as one material among others within a broader visual and conceptual language. His work occupies a post-photographic territory where images operate less as documentary traces than as constructed forms.

His aesthetic is built on a deliberate tension between the real and the fictional: fleeting silhouettes, disappearing bodies, reconstructed faces, and highly graphic compositions. Refined over more than two decades, this visual grammar gives rise to images that feel at once familiar and improbable. Grainy black-and-white photographs resonate with highly structured colour works, forming a coherent language across mediums, processes, and contexts.

At its conceptual core, his work interrogates the status of the sign, proof, and value in contemporary art. It operates simultaneously on two registers — immediate visual presence and theoretical rigour — while distinguishing itself from historical conceptual art through a deliberate embrace of aesthetics. Drawing on the legacies of conceptual and post-conceptual practices, Gérard extends them through the use of cryptographic and computational operations as concrete artistic procedures rather than metaphors.

Franck Gérard collaborates with luxury brands and cultural institutions, extending his visual language into fashion, hospitality, stage environments, and high-end creative campaigns. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections as well as integrated into luxury-hospitality spaces.
